I’ve tried to do speech bubbles like that blend before, but without the gradient. Now I have found the perfect way of doing it. It is such an improvement, I may have to hunt down strips in previous projects where I did it the old, broken way and fix em.
I think it’s safe to say that while other adults/characters of the Pokemon universe I’m borrowing may indeed have their little quirks, only Professor Oak will be this crazy. I don’t really know who I’m basing him on, but Oak always seemed a little off to me and I tried to incorporate that the best I can.
Where has Professor Oak been all this time??
One of the minor incongruities of the video games is that you can battle with pokemon everywhere and it (almost) never effects anything outside of the battle space. In a real world situation, Oak should get pissed every time Gary and whoever have a battle in his lab.
There was one game that did that. Then your mom came upstatirs to your trashed room, said something like “boys will be boys. Go ahead and leave on your adventure, I’ll clean up this mess.”
Said no mom in RL, ever.
Is calling Bulbasaur just ‘a plant’ a slur of some kind? I know Rachael meant it as a slight, but how offensive is it, exactly? I have no idea and I’m not going to try and explore that. Instead, I’m more interested in exploring what combat in Pokemon could be if it was story driven, instead of rules driven. Like if it was a game of D&D. What can my players do that’s creative enough to beat someone with the upper hand?
Also of note, this is one of the strips I was working on when I took a survey of public opinion of Squirtle shells. It was not a rigorously precise survey, but It turned up useful information. So Squirtle’s belly’s will be fairly set from here on out. Which is cool enough I guess.

I know this may seem like a pointless strip, but pages like these ar my favorite part of cartooning. I find my best writing comes out when I stop trying to get the story to move and instead, try stalling. I REALLY love that effect in the third panel. Like, really really. You’ll be seeing it a lot more often, although it is more work for me. I normally do the lineart first, but I can’t on those.
