Sneezing when someone mentions you is an anime thing. I couldn’t remember if there was a local version of the tradition. Oak was very nice to draw after so long. I internalized him a lot better, I think.Check out my Patreon to see these pages a week earlier!
Man, Oak’s speech was hard to cram into Panel 3. I wanted to have more beat panels, because I love them so, but I needed to get a move on. Return of the Lineless panel, tho.Check out my Patreon to see these pages a week earlier!

So doing this strip made me come up with a stupid little system for staging Pokemon fights in a story based comic. I don’t know how well it will work, but It’s there in my noggin now. Suffice it to say, for it being their first fight in who know how long, both of them have been hurt pretty bad. Part of that is their inexperience. As they get stronger, they’ll be able to take more hits, and do more damage.
Will Bulbasuar and Squirtle ever fight again? I have no idea. That is far future stuff. Hopefully Rachael will have more options at such a fight, but that’s another thing I’m not sure of. I barely have chapter 1 stuff written! The next rival battle isn’t until Mount Moon, which would probably be Chapters 3 or 4!
But there will be combats, yes. Combats with actual winners. And fights that matter.
I’ve tried to do speech bubbles like that blend before, but without the gradient. Now I have found the perfect way of doing it. It is such an improvement, I may have to hunt down strips in previous projects where I did it the old, broken way and fix em.
I think it’s safe to say that while other adults/characters of the Pokemon universe I’m borrowing may indeed have their little quirks, only Professor Oak will be this crazy. I don’t really know who I’m basing him on, but Oak always seemed a little off to me and I tried to incorporate that the best I can.
Where has Professor Oak been all this time??
One of the minor incongruities of the video games is that you can battle with pokemon everywhere and it (almost) never effects anything outside of the battle space. In a real world situation, Oak should get pissed every time Gary and whoever have a battle in his lab.
There was one game that did that. Then your mom came upstatirs to your trashed room, said something like “boys will be boys. Go ahead and leave on your adventure, I’ll clean up this mess.”
Said no mom in RL, ever.
Oh, Rachael. You’re so naive!Check out my Patreon to see these pages a week earlier!
It was hard work having all these spheres maintain consistency across the panels. Especially when I don’t use consistency in my scenes!Check out my Patreon to see these pages a week earlier!
